Volume of Goods Determine Shipping Costs

For online shop owners, knowledge about shipping costs based on weight and volume of goods is essential. Generally, we know that shipping costs are only calculated based on weight. However, in reality, the length, width, and height of the goods also affect the shipping costs and need to be measured by online store owners.

Accurate measurements before starting to sell goods online are necessary to avoid issues with shipping costs. This is because online shop owners often have to bear additional shipping costs when the size they input into the marketplace is smaller than the actual size.

When taking measurements, the required dimensions are the length, width, and height of the item in centimeters. Usually, measuring tools or tape measures have two units, inches and centimeters. One inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters (cm). Therefore, it is important not to use measurements in inches when inputting data into the marketplace, as it will be 2.54 times smaller than the actual size.

Online shop owners need to know the shipping cost formula based on the volume of goods.

The formula for regular shipments is as follows:
Volume/6000 = Length (cm) x width (cm) x height (cm) /6000, compared to the weight of the goods (kg).
If Volume/6000 is greater than the weight of the goods, then the reference for shipping costs is Volume/6000.

For example, if Volume/6000>Weight:

Let's say an item weighs 2 kg, with a length of 30 cm, width of 40 cm, height of 20 cm, and the shipping cost to the destination is Rp.10,000/kg. The calculation would be as follows:
Volume/6000 = 30 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm/6000 = 4
Weight = 2 kg
Since Volume/6000 (4) is greater than the weight (2), the reference for shipping costs will be Volume/6000. Therefore, the shipping fee will be 4 x Rp. 10,000 = Rp. 40,000.

On the other hand, if Volume/6000 is less than or equal to the weight of the goods, then the reference for shipping costs is the weight.

For example, if Volume/6000 <= Weight:

Let's say an item weighs 2 kg, with a length of 12 cm, width of 10 cm, height of 10 cm, and the shipping cost to the destination is Rp.10,000/kg. The calculation would be as follows:
Volume/6000 = 12 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm/6000 = 0.2
Weight = 2 kg
Since Volume/6000 (0.2) is less than the weight (2), the reference for shipping costs will be the weight. Therefore, the shipping fee will be 2 x Rp. 10,000 = Rp. 20,000.

By measuring the length of goods before selling, online shop owners prevent unexpected costs and provide more accurate shipping cost information to prospective buyers.
